Press Releases

Fremont, Ca.—March 18, 2022 – Bridgelux, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of LED lighting technology and solutions, announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Yi-Qun Li as its Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.  Dr. Li replaces Tim Lester who recently departed Bridgelux to pursue other opportunities.

Prior to being appointed as the CEO of Bridgelux, Dr. Li was the co-founder of Intematix Corporation, and served as its CEO and Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Dr. Li is highly regarded in the lighting industry—considered by many to be a pioneer in LED technology and its applications.  Over the past 20 years he led multiple innovation initiatives in phosphor technology including silicates, lutetium garnets, coated narrow-band red and narrow-band green sulphates.

In recent years, two of Dr. Li’s passion projects, F90 and Thrive, have had the most wide-ranging commercial impact on the industry.  F90, which uses the novel KSF phosphors, has facilitated the confluence of high efficacy performance and high color rendering in the same package.  Thrive, which uses multiple broad-blue chips in the same package, creates full-spectrum emission that matches the spectrum of natural light. Under his guidance, Bridgelux has expanded both programs into multiple SMD and COB products for both commercial and residential applications.

Dr. Li holds Doctorate and Master of Science degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in China. To date, Dr. Li has published more than 50 scientific papers and holds over 120 issued US patents on a wide variety of technology including LED phosphor compositions, remote phosphor structures, and LED devices. Dr. Li has also served as Research Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology, Research Engineer at semiconductor companies EMCORE and ATMI, and held executive positions at start-up companies NZ Applied Technologies and Spinix Corporation.

“When you think about the enabling technologies that have allowed LEDs to dominate, nothing has had more impact on performance, cost and quality of LEDs as the improvements in phosphor technology,” says Don Peifer, founder of Smash the Bulb, who along with Bridgelux was recently recognized by the DOE as a concept phase winner for the prestigious L-Prize. “Dr. Li and Bridgelux are critical contributors to the state of the art we all enjoy as both an industry and as consumers.”

FREMONT, Ca – December 9, 2021 –Bridgelux (www.bridgelux.com), the leading developer and manufacturer of innovative LED solutions, announces its expansion from commercial to residential applications for F90, its popular CRI 90 product.  A licensing agreement with GE Lighting, a Savant Company, for its Potassium Fluorosilicate (PFS) technology will allow Bridgelux to bring its F90 technology to a wide range of consumer lighting solutions.   Popular lamp types that will now be powered by F90 technology include A lamps, BR, MR and Candelabra.

Bridgelux has created an important, enabling LED packaging technology that facilitates the transition from PFS’s cool white (>4000K) applications, such as display lighting, where it has been previously relegated to warm white (2700K) applications such as residential lighting due to the high concentration of PFS related lifetime issues.  Bridgelux’s patented and innovative packaging solution solves the lifetime issue that has plagued PFS and allowed the expansion of F90 into the home.

Traditionally, there is an inverse relationship between CRI and efficacy: the higher the CRI, the lower the efficacy.  By replacing broad-band red nitride with a narrow-band PFS phosphor, F90 products are able to perform as well as competing 80 CRI products.  The F90 products, while delivering CRI of 90 or greater and R9 > 50, will achieve efficacy that qualifies for California Title 20 and Europe’s Energy-related Products (ErP) for Class C (165 lm/W) and Class B (185 lm/W) designation.  The following chart lists both F90 LED and Filaments types ready for immediate release.

“By combining PFS technology with our proprietary packaging technology, F90 LEDs are poised to deliver industry leading efficacy with high CRI in a package consumer can trust,” says Tim Lester, CEO of Bridgelux. “Bridgelux has been an industry leader in lighting innovation for decades and we are proud to introduce these new, exciting products to our portfolio of game-changing solutions.”

FREMONT, Ca – December 1, 2021 –Bridgelux (www.bridgelux.com), the leading developer and manufacturer of innovative LED solutions, announces the results of a study the firm commissioned for its innovative full spectrum product family, Thrive.  The goal of the study was to ascertain whether top designers would recognize a difference between Thrive and 90 CRI products and find out which light source looked more natural based on their expert opinion.

The study utilized a complement of Thrive and 90+ CRI LEDs at three popular color temperatures: 2700K, 3000K and 4000K. The light sources were placed inside a box and attached to a switch.  Common articles in different colors and finishes along with a standard Color Chart were placed under the LEDs inside the box. Designers were able to switch back and forth in each CCT to discern any differences.  Their comments were recorded over a series of 18 separate tests.  Across this wide range of objects, Thrive was preferred 88% of the time compared to 8% for 90 CRI and 4% undecided. Enthusiastic response to Thrive were typical with one lighting designer claiming “It felt like sunlight coming through the window.” A one-minute video showing how designers embraced the natural spectrum of Thrive can be viewed here: https://www.bridgelux.com/resources/bridgelux-thrive

Thrive uses a broad-blue chip technology and special phosphor blend to fill in the common Cyan gap that plagues most LED solutions.  The technology is at the heart of Sylvania’s TruWave technology for their popular Nature™ Lamp series of products.  Because of Thrive’s full-spectrum approach, Thrive is more able to match the spectrum of the sun across all color temperatures. Benefits of the natural spectrum of the sun using Thrive include reduced eye strain, less fragmented sleep and a higher sense of emotional well-being.

“The development of new LED technologies is often times done in a vacuum,” says Tim Lester, CEO of Bridgelux.  “It is hard to know whether designers will like it.  By tracking as close to the natural spectrum of the sun, however, we were able to anticipate the positive reactions.  Even so, the overwhelming support from high-end, high-impact specifiers is humbling and lets us know we hit our target.”

FREMONT, CA – November 15, 2021 –Bridgelux (www.bridgelux.com), the leading developer and manufacturer of innovative LED solutions, announces the release of Thrive 93, a breakthrough family of LED products with a unique formula capable of high efficiency and natural light-matching spectrum.

Bridgelux Thrive is expanding its range of high-fidelity products to include both Thrive 93 and Thrive 98 (CRI of 93 and 98 respectfully.)  Both families create a stable of LED solutions that represent the closest match to natural light across the critical wavelength range (from blue to green) for human health.  Both Thrive products engage a broad-blue chip technology and a special phosphor blend to fill in the common cyan gap that plagues most LED solutions.  “The Broad Blue emission is what allows the Thrive family of products to match natural light so well,” says Mark van den Berg, VP of Sales at Bridgelux.  “By creating multiple blue emission peaks, we are able to better replicate natural light than competitors whose LEDs emit a single, narrow spike of blue.”  Benefits of the enriched blue spectrum and full spectrum coverage include improved eye comfort, sleep/wake cycle and emotional well-being.

Where Thrive 98 uses a longer wavelength red, which helps achieve R9 >90, Thrive 93’s red peak is slightly shorter in the visible spectrum, which produces R9 >50.  This slight modification creates a 12% competitive edge in efficacy over Thrive 98 and competing 90 CRI products. “In Thrive 93, designers can enjoy premium fidelity across the entire spectrum in addition to amazing efficiency all in the same LED package.” says Tim Lester, CEO of Bridgelux.

Bridgelux in preparing Thrive 93 for the lighting design community created an extensive formal survey conducted with some of the top specifiers in Europe and North America.  In over 30 hours of interviews, Thrive was compared to traditional 90 CRI products.  Over 90% of those interviewed preferred Thrive to 90 CRI.  Designers felt that colors rendered under Thrive were more natural.  Surprisingly, designers also felt that Thrive was so successful at color temperatures that they wouldn’t naturally use (such as 4000K,) that they would consider expanding their palette to include a broader range of CCTs.  Thrive products are being used across multiple platforms which ensures that you can bring sun-like quality of light to both your home and your office.
