Applications Lab Engineer-Manager

Job Summary:

This is a hybrid application engineer and lab manager position.  In addition to performing traditional applications engineering work, the ideal candidate is responsible for all aspects of applications engineering laboratory daily operations, including ensuring equipment calibration, configuring and running experiments under engineering direction, prototype system fabrication (electrical and mechanical),  and ensuring provisioning of needed supplies.  The applications engineering duties include development of application notes, demo systems, and technical sales collateral to support existing products and new LED product introductions. The applications engineer works directly with Bridgelux customers, FAEs, marketing and sales to provide technical support, training and guidance for Bridgelux LED products.  The successful candidate will be “hands-on” in all aspects of high brightness LED applications including driver, secondary optics and thermal solution specification, selection and testing.  Strong knowledge of driver electronics preferred.  Prototyping, troubleshooting and testing skills as well as strong communication and presentation skills are essential.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily lab operations, ensuring all equipment is functional and expendable supplies are maintained

  • Ensure all equipment is properly calibrated and logs maintained

  • Organize and track and ensure secure handling of equipment, demo systems, customer owned loaners, and sample inventory

  • Perform optical, thermal and electrical characterization measurements and support design of experiments (DOE)

  • Assist other engineers in running experiments

  • Generate written reports of experiment results

  • Perform test equipment modifications and upgrades as needed

  • Generate BOMs and source components (electrical and mechanical) to assist in customer reference designs

  • Modify customer provided luminares and assemble prototype luminares with limited guidance

  • Work directly with customers to answer technical questions, assist in design-in and qualification efforts, resolve performance or quality issues and act as a liaison between the factory and customer to drive issues to closure.

  • Provide customer feedback to marketing and development teams regarding test methodology, quality expectations and competitive information

  • Develop and manage applications lab resources for new and existing LED products evaluation and testing

  • Assist in developing  customer ready evaluation/demo kits including design, development, sourcing and deployment

  • Define and author applications notes/technical collateral and revise existing applications notes/technical collateral for new LED products

  • Work with ecosystem partners, especially driver manufacturers, to determine suitability of present products for use and to ensure optimal alignment of future product roadmaps.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or Sciences.  Mechatronics (ME/EE) or EE Degree preferred.  

  • Minimum of 5 years experience as an Applications or Design Engineer, preferably in the LED, semiconductor applications or lighting industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to use test equipment, including power analyzers, power sources, and power supplies. 

  • Hands on experience in electrical and mechanical system prototyping and assembly

  • Electronic/electrical system troubleshooting and rework

  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, perform acceptance inspection of machined components and interface with machine shop vendors

  • Familiarity with ATE system operation. (Agilent VEE and Python programming a plus)

  • Familiarity with FCC RFI testing methods (conducted and radiated) a plus

  • Familiarity with UL and CE testing methods a plus

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills

  • Knowledgeable of basic LED driver circuit design and worldwide mains power supplies.

  • Knowledge of appropriate prototyping and testing techniques for suitable for LED lighting systems— work requires hands on skills, including building of prototype fixtures and test systems.  Ability to troubleshoot test system software is a plus.

  • Strong people skills—experienced communicating and working directly with customers.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. 

  • Attention to detail and quality focused.

  • Demonstrated project planning experience preferred.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment with a positive attitude.
