Sr. Firmware Developer

JOB SUMMARY

As a Sr. Firmware Developer, you will be a vital part of our fast growing company. You will be a key member of our Smart Lighting development team based in our San Francisco office and will report to the Engineering Director of Smart Lighting.

The ideal candidate will be a confident individual contributor and an outstanding team player with proven track record on having taken part in the development of embedded products from concept to mass production. In this position, the successful candidate will work closely with the marketing, test, quality, reliability and production teams to coordinate and carry on activities related to the products under development. The candidate will also interact and drive activities with contract manufacturers in the US an overseas. Minimal travel is expected but required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for all aspects of firmware development for new, innovative product designs using embedded microprocessors.
  • Responsible for creating detailed project proposals and work statements (including traceable deliverables) when engaging with 3rd party FW/SW development houses.
  • Scope of responsibilities will cover architectural design, technical specifications, reusable modular designs, cost-effective engineering designs, code development, testing to robust environments, production implementation and product support in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Candidate will interact with engineering, marketing, management and project leads to assure that product development priorities are completed to schedule and budget, while ensuring quality and product performance requirements are met.
  • Product development activities include design and development, design reviews, product verification and field validation along with coordinating with quality assurance and developing appropriate documentation.
  • Responsible for keeping excellent, organized project records and documentation.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • BS in Electrical, Electronic or Computer Engineering or other related technical degree. 
  • 3+ years experience in new product development, including firmware design for electronic products with embedded microprocessors, with increasing levels of job responsibility.
  • Proficiency in writing applications for 8-bit and 32-bit microprocessors using C and/or C++.
  • Prior experience using embedded processors such as ARM Cortex M+, Atmel AVR, Microchip PIC, 8051, etc.
  • Experience with inter-circuit communications using UART, I2C, SPI or similar methods.
  • Experience interfacing to external hardware using peripherals such as serial ports, A/Ds, PWMs, timers, etc.
  • Experience with multi-tasking and multi-processor communication with and without RTOS implementations.
  • Experience with techniques and methods for in-field self-programming of flash code memory in microprocessors (bootloaders).
  • Experience in use of development/debugging tools; e.g. C compilers, ICE, JTAG, logic analyzers, etc.
  • Some knowledge of hardware such as understanding schematics and using an oscilloscope.
  • Prior experience implementing communication protocols in low-cost microcontrollers including creating proprietary protocols.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills. High energy with an enthusiastic attitude.
  • Experience in project management and scheduling.
  • Experience showing increasing level of responsibility in design projects, with several designs managed from conception through production release.
  • Experience in design verification and validation, including design reviews, code reviews, test plans, etc.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MSEE or other advanced degree in a related area.    
  • Experience in design and development of cost-effective wired and wireless communication links between electronic devices
  • Knowledge of communications methods and techniques including wireless, mesh networks, Ethernet, USB, RS-485, Telco-modems, FSK, Manchester, etc.
  • Experience with any wireless communication protocols such as, Bluetooth, WiFi, ZigBee, NFC
  • Experience in the lighting industry would be an asset
